Start The New Year Right!

Do You Know the Secret to Successful New Year’s Resolutions?

Are you looking to lose weight, stop smoking, quit being lazy? Maybe you’re not accomplishing these goals because of the way you say and think of them.

Research suggests that one of the biggest reasons we can’t stick with our resolutions may be because of the way we frame them. A study published in the journal Psychological Science concluded that negative words like “not” and “stop” throw off your brain. So if you resolve to “stop smoking,” your brain simply registers “smoking.” Or if you decide to “not eat sweets,” you may crave them even more. If you’re one of the millions who are determined to lose weight in 2012, the key to success is to focus on positive steps you can take to achieve that goal. Here’s how to put that into action: Instead of telling yourself you won’t eat sweets, tell yourself that you can’t wait to eat some beautiful, fresh fruit for dessert. Cut the fruit up and make it look nice. Cut up fruit is always a treat!

Rather than thinking about all the foods you can’t eat, make a menu plan for the week filled with meals you can look forward to. Get a new cookbook filled with healthy recipes that are easy to make and taste delicious! Write out your grocery menu ahead of time and stick to it. Cook what you buy according to plan.

When you’re in the grocery store, don’t think about all the foods you shouldn’t buy. Instead, challenge yourself to find some new, healthy foods you’ve never tried, and make it an adventure!

Rather than telling yourself that you must exercise, and dreading it, reward yourself by trying a fun new class, such as zumba, yoga or water aerobics. Whatever your resolutions are this year, remember to frame your resolutions in the positive!

Stay away from words like can’t, don’t, stop & quit!

Are You Breathing Lake County Air Right Now?

Hold Your Breath While You Read This... (not really)
Antioxidants are substances or nutrients in our foods which can prevent or slow oxidative damage to our body. When our body cells use oxygen, they naturally produce free radicals (by-products) which can cause damage.

Free radicals are also introduced through external sources such as exposure to pollution. Other free radical producers that damage cells include things that people put into their bodies, such as- alcoholic beverages, unhealthy, processed, chemical-laden foods, cigarette smoke & stress. In much the same way as oxidation creates rust, causing a breakdown on the surface of metal objects, oxidation inside the body causes a breakdown of cells. Free radicals produced by this breakdown attack healthy cells, usually DNA as well as proteins and fats. This chain of events weakens immune system function as well as speeding up the aging process. It is also linked to several diseases such as cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetes, various forms of cancer, and heart disease. Some studies indicate possible links to arthritis and several other chronic conditions.

Antioxidants act as "free radical scavengers" that prevent and repair damage done by these free radicals. The healthier your diet is, the more antioxidants you will consume however, nutrient-rich soil is uncommon these days unless you’re eating strictly organic. so…. What Causes An Enlarged Prostate?

The male prostate becomes inflamed and irritated because of elevated levels of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. DHT is normally present throughout the body in small amounts, but as men age, their bodies tend to produce more DHT, which binds to androgen (male hormone) receptors on the prostate and stimulates cellular responses that lead to an enlarged prostate, also called benign prostate hyperplasia, or BPH.

An enlarged prostate causes urinary problems, such as:
• urinating often
• slow urination, needing to wait for urination to start
• urinating during sleep
• interrupted urination that starts and stops
• straining or pushing hard in order to urinate
• leakage or dribbling at the end of urination

One of the problems with BPH is that it is not usually painful. That means many people will leave it untreated thinking that there will not be any negative side effects. This is a very bad assumption. Left untreated BPH can lead to urinary tract infections as well as bladder stones. Also, BPH is a progressive disease, so the longer it is left untreated, the worse it will get.

What Can You Do About an Enlarged Prostate?
Saw Palmetto - is the most popular and researched prostate herb. Saw Palmetto contains Beta Sitosterol, a powerful compound that interferes with the conversion of testosterone to DHT. Studies show that Saw Palmetto shrinks enlarged prostates & relieves urinary problems.

Other important nutrients for prostate problems
• Zinc - an important mineral for many bodily processes, a zinc deficiency predisposes the prostate gland to infection, which could eventually lead to enlargement.
• Vitamin B6 - along with zinc, Vitamin B6 regulates the hormone that converts testosterone to DHT, and helps prevent swelling of the prostate.
• Lycopene - this extract from tomatoes contains powerful antioxidants that may be able to reduce BPH inflammation and prevent prostate cancer.
